Your journey begins with just a primitive house and a villager. capable of training villagers and basic military units to protect against barbarians, animals, and other players. The game progresses through various ages, starting from the challenging Stone Age phase where survival is tough due to the presence of barbarians and threatening animals. Powered by the Unity engine, Kingdoms Rise and Fall offers expansive maps with detailed building textures and diverse terrains. These maps showcase various biomes and regions, including hills, mountains, forests, and more.
Exploration plays a vital role in the early stages of the game, allowing you to discover valuable resources and encounter wildlife. However, be prepared to face increasingly hostile tribes, plagues/diseases, revolutionary ideals and aggressive animals as you accumulate more resources.
Games can take a a while to complete up to 10 hours sometimes. It’s hard to encompass all of humanity into that time span but we did our best!

Kingdoms Rise and Fall is a real gem in the world of early access real-time strategy games. From the moment I jumped into the game after the latest update, I was pleasantly surprised by the significant improvements it had made. Long loading times and frustrating drops in frame rates seem to be mostly fixed. The newest update worked wonders to address these technical issues, making the overall gameplay experience much smoother.
Diving into Kingdoms Rise and Fall, it was impossible not to think about the classic real-time strategy game like, Empire Earth. With the way you can research and train many different units and buildings across eras. This game manages to capture the essence of real-time strategy in a pretty unique way, even though it may still have a few rough edges. It holds the potential to become a remarkable addition to the genre, infusing fresh life and excitement into it.
In Kingdoms Rise and Fall you start in the what seems to be prehistoric era, where you start as a primitive tribe, engaged in the primal activities of hunting and gathering. The map is teeming with various types of resources, some seemingly useless at first but gradually becoming invaluable as your civilization evolves. It's not just the resources; the game world is also alive with diverse and formidable enemies, including rival factions. Initially, the AI left much to be desired, but thanks to the latest update, it has become significantly more responsive and now launches full-scale attacks or defensively manages its units, which adds depth and challenge to the game.
The wildlife also plays a crucial role in the game. From bears and wolves to elephants and more, these creatures not only pose a threat but also provide sustenance for your growing civilization. The delicate balance between survival and expansion is truly captivating.
One of the standout features in Kingdoms Rise and Fall is the naval gameplay, reminiscent of the classic Rise of Nations. Units effortlessly transform into boats when crossing water, simplifying navigation. This feature leads to epic naval battles, including massive ships like triremes and even battleships. The progression through time is awe-inspiring, taking you from spears and clubs to modern fighter jets. While the game may encounter some glitches along the way, the sheer variety of units and the AI's utilization of them is commendable, offering endless strategic possibilities.
Despite being an early access title, Kingdoms Rise and Fall surprises with its depth and content. There are hundreds of different unit types, even if some require tweaking for balance. The expansive maps provide hours upon hours of gameplay, with exploration being a key element. You could spend three or four hours in a single session and still not uncover the entire map, a feat not often seen even in AAA RTS games.
It is a pretty demanding game surprisingly. Possibly not optimized very well as I have a 7th gen I7 with 16gb of ram and a 3070, and was still having issues later in the game. So obviously still has some bugs and optimization to iron out. The potential of this game is there, and is a fun play already. It has been a great find offering a pretty good real-time strategy experience at an incredibly reasonable price point. I recommend it to any strategy enthusiast and will continue playing and standing by for future updates.
