Unsolved Case: The Scarlet Hyacinth Collector's Edition
It's been a while since I actually wrote a review so I may be a bit rusty.
The third game in the Unsolved Case series. I mention it below but I highly suggest playing the first two before jumping into this one. The story is a continuation and connects too much into the previous two. It would likely be an instant bad game story-wise if you don't have the knowledge of the previous ones.
So far it's a series that I've liked and has kept me interested. Given, there is a bias since I love detective/investigation/mystery games and these cover those topics.
Now to the actual gameplay- straight to the point. The puzzles were its downfall for me.
At least 2 puzzles were downright unnerving, frustrating, tedious and long. So much so, I skipped them and I'm the type of person that pretends the skip button doesn't exist.
I like the challenge of a good puzzle but these were not challenging. Yes, it can be considered that they were hard but they were just not good. It wasn't the difficulty. There is such a thing as a difficult puzzle that is still entertaining and feels challenging in the best way. These were not that.
Then the rest were the complete opposite. Simple and extremely easy, even in Hard Mode.
As far as Hidden Objects scenes go, I did enjoy all of them. This is a personal preference, not a fault of the game but I hate the ones that add two objects and you have to figure out which object to find. I hate those and I believe there were at least two of this king. Even so, they were creative and passable.
When it comes to the story it is highly recommended to play the previous ones. The story is a continuation of the ones before and not having the knowledge would make the story feel boring and empty. Also important to play them in order to get the best experience, but maybe not as impactful. Not knowing the story from the previous two will make this one lose its charm.
Ever since they started the DLC content I've been against it. I think it's a nasty tactic to not offer the full game and instead charge extra if you want to experience the full game and story. Not only that, the content of these DLCs is very small, I wouldn't consider worth the $2.99 price tag they put on most.
I will never be in favor of this action to the point it always makes me want to give a bad review based on this but it wouldn't really be fair the game itself.
I'm reviewing the game and not the developer/publisher's money grabbing tactics.
When it comes to the bonus chapter, I wasn't a fan. It felt like it was meant to justify the killer in the main storyline and that just didn't sit very well with me. I get that it is meant to give the player more story but- eh.
Overall, I had a great time playing it. Of course with the exception of the puzzles. I even had a "gasp! They went there!" moment which is extremely rare.
With all of that I would recommend the game just not at full price.
As long as they have the DLC, Domini games will never get a full price recommendation, since you will not be getting a full game even at full price and the "Collector's Edition" tag.
Now, this is me being nitpicky. In previous games, when in a hidden object scene you clicked too fast, you'd get a crime scene tape animation that would cover the screen, not allowing you to click again until 5 seconds had passed. In this one, you get a very lazy text screen saying you need to wait 5 seconds. it was unattractive and it felt cheap and lazy. It doesn't affect gameplay but why change it? The animation looked nice and made sense with the game. Just aesthetically pleasing versus a cheap screen.
My final rating would be: It's an okay game that was borderline good if only the puzzles had been better formulated. In turn causing my recommendation of not buying it at fulI price. It's not bad enough to recommend an exaggerated discount, but some discount would be just fine.
If it does go on an amazing sale, maybe the DLC could be worth it. Maybe.

My oppinion is mostly positive [75%[, more detective investigative content with stronger storryline, less finding repetitive hidden objects, and would be better raring. Dlc also quite good, but its too long content.
