Chains of the Goddess
For centuries, the residents of your quiet little village have sent their strongest into the Labyrinth, where a powerful Goddess is bound. It is said that those who reach her can persuade her to bless the village… But the Labyrinth is a treacherous place, full of illusions, lies, and insane spirits. Today, it is your turn to descend into the Labyrinth. The thought fills you with eager anticipation, for you know that you are different from every other would-be hero that has attempted this journey.
To you, this is all a game.
Generate a random hero, then descend into a labyrinth full of monsters. Your hero will attack on their own — your job is to figure out which powerful items to loot, which upgrades to purchase, and which dialogue options to pick. If you are persistent in your efforts, you will reach the Goddess, time and time again. However, each time you interact with the Goddess, the whole world will change, little by little.
Perhaps you will change, too?
This game is intended to play over and over again. Each successful run will advance the story and increase difficulty.

Combat itself is effectively idle, so don't expect an action game. However, the roguelite experience and character development can be surprisingly addictive, Your item choices are the most consequential decisions you make, but sometimes you roll the dice with event dialogues, and it makes or breaks a run.

I didn't know what to expect going into Chains of the Goddess, but I was pleasantly surprised at how deep the mechanics go.
At the beginning you get to choose a hero from a pre-defined bunch of stats, you can re-roll if you want to try for better stats. Once chosen, you engage in combat against various different enemies which are beautifully hand drawn images. The attacks are handled for you but after each section of fighting you are presented with a piece of armour, a weapon or amulet to take onto the next part of the journey with you. Each item can change your load out. The objective is simple, make your way to the goddess in the labyrinth who is bound by chains.
As you defeat each enemy, you acquire gold which can be spent at the main menu to upgrade your starting stats, such as health, agility, strength, wisdom & more. This is where the games core loop mechanic comes into play by demanding multiple playthroughs. It's a good hook, and it does hook you in. Each run will want to see you improve each time. You can choose to rest at the tree of life & continue your run at a later time or continue onto the goddess. I really like the sub story moments as well that the game throws at you. These give the possibility of gaining buffs, and also taking them away & negating your character abilities. For example, I met a cute rabbit. I went to pet it but it bit my entire arm off. So be careful of the decisions you make as they do have severe consequences.
Overall, I really enjoyed the time I played with Chains of the Goddess, and will be diving into it some more over the coming weeks.
