Going on an adventure is a lot of fun but it is also a costly activity. Especially with a troll guarding every single bridge and demanding payment.
The further you go, the more expensive it gets. Luckily there are plenty of treasure chests to beat the gold out of.
Costly Adventure is a unique spin on Match-3 game with RPG elements.
Features
- 5 fantasy characters to match
- 30 levels with increasing difficulty
- 3 boss battles
- 2 talent trees focusing on a different play-style
- 24 unique talents, each changing the way you match
- Achievements to collect
- Attributes and items to make your dream build

Costly Adventure is a really clever combination of genres, and I liked how naturally the match three system fits into the fantasy adventure. Instead of matching gems or simple shapes, I match my actual party members to make them attack. It sounds unusual at first, but once I started playing, I found the system surprisingly easy to understand.
The combat is where the game really works for me. Each character contributes differently when matched, so I have to think about which members I want to activate and when. Talent choices, items and specializations let me shape the party around a particular strategy, which gives the simple matching mechanic more depth than I expected. I enjoyed looking for combinations that could keep my party alive while dealing enough damage to push forward.
The roguelite structure also gives the adventure some nice unpredictability. I make choices along the way, build my characters and deal with encounters that can change the way a run develops. The bridge troll demanding more payment as I progress is a fun little twist because it gives the journey a clear resource pressure. I liked having to think about my gold rather than simply treating it as another number that naturally increases.
The pixel art and fantasy presentation fit the idea very well. Everything has a playful storybook quality, while the underground adventure and unusual treasure chests give the setting enough personality to keep things interesting. I also enjoyed the fact that the game does not take itself too seriously. The silly premise works because the presentation fully commits to it.
My biggest issue is that the core match three gameplay can become repetitive after a while. The character builds and choices help, but the basic process of matching party members remains the foundation of almost every battle. I also think the adventure could have used more environmental variety and a little more room for experimentation with different builds.
The harder difficulty is a welcome addition because it gives me a reason to revisit the game after finishing the normal route. I liked that the systems are simple enough for a casual session but still allow me to think more carefully when the game starts demanding better choices. It is a nice balance between puzzle game accessibility and roguelite decision making.
Overall, Costly Adventure is a surprisingly fun free game that turns match three into a genuinely functional combat system. I liked building my party, choosing talents and trying to manage my resources while working toward the next part of the adventure. The formula can become repetitive, but the combination is creative enough that I had a good time with it.
