Excellent shooter but very short, designed to be replayed to get all endings.

I think this game might be a good litmus test for dating. If your potential girlfriend doesn't make fun of you or dump you after playing this "she's a keeper".

gal gun return is not a bad remaster. it is the first game of the franchise after all, new and updated graphics, much more characters and the old witty humour it is known for still pertains, right after double peace.
however, since gal gun 2 released previously, features here didn't meet what people expect.
the aiming in this game is bullsh*t. sometimes crit hit registers, sometimes supposed obvious crit breaks combo. they took out the save system. i had to go through the same duplicate scene every route i did, and every full route takes like 40 mins. the minigames didn't do good either, repetitive and tedious. to reach a true ending, you have to follow this elaborate guide of precise micromanagement, meaning if you don't have a guide, there's no f*cking way you would find one.
all things aside, it is still a fun game. but if further games would be as tedious as these, you better off with just double peace. 6/10

Honestly, GalGun Returns* is the kind of game you really don’t want to play with someone walking behind you. The premise is already insane: you're a regular high school guy who suddenly becomes ultra-popular with girls because of an angel's mistake, and now you have to "shoot" them with pheromone bullets to stop their love-crazed attacks. Yeah, it’s a rail shooter, but every “enemy” is a girl trying to confess her love in the most over-the-top ways.
The gameplay is actually fun. You can’t move freely, but the aiming feels satisfying—especially when you hit the “weak spots” (yes, that’s a real thing). Then there’s “Doki Doki Mode,” which is basically fanservice turned up to eleven and makes you feel like the FBI might knock on your door.
Visually? Full-on anime vibes. Bright, cute, and sometimes… a bit too bold. The voice acting is all in Japanese, so it feels like you’re inside an interactive anime. The story isn’t deep, but each character route is quirky and fun to mess around with. Plus, multiple endings give it some decent replay value.
But let’s be real—this game is not for everyone. If you’re uncomfortable with heavy fanservice or don’t enjoy super-weird games, this might not be your thing. But if you’re in the mood for something silly, unique, and totally different from the usual mainstream titles? This is pure chaotic fun. Just… maybe lock your door while playing.

GalGun Returns* is a remastered version of the original GalGun*, developed by Inti Creates. It updates the 2011 rail shooter with improved visuals, smoother controls, and additional content while maintaining its light arcade structure. The game focuses on shooting targets across branching routes in a first-person, on-rails format.
Gameplay follows the standard rail shooter formula. The player automatically moves through levels, aiming and firing at incoming targets using either a controller or mouse input. Scoring is based on speed, precision, and accuracy. The gameplay rhythm is quick and reactive rather than strategic, emphasizing arcade-style timing.
Mechanically, GalGun Returns* refines aiming responsiveness and user interface design. Camera transitions are smoother than in the original, and targeting is more precise. Each stage ends with performance ratings and unlocks, giving incentive for replaying levels to improve scores.
Visually, the remaster delivers cleaner, higher-resolution textures and sharper character outlines. The environments are bright and stylized, supporting fast readability rather than realism. The presentation remains consistent with anime aesthetics—simple geometry, vivid color, and high contrast.
Audio features energetic background music, brief voice segments, and sound effects that support fast-paced shooting feedback. The sound mix is clean, though limited in variation across stages. The tone is upbeat throughout, fitting the game’s casual rhythm.
The remaster also includes previously released content and quality-of-life improvements, such as expanded routes and customization options. It runs smoothly on modern systems, with short load times and minimal performance issues. Save and replay systems function reliably, supporting quick play sessions.
Overall, GalGun Returns* is a technically solid remaster of a straightforward on-rails shooter. It modernizes controls and visuals while preserving the simplicity and structure of the original. For players who enjoy short, score-driven arcade experiences with light visual-novel framing, it performs competently within its genre.

Okay so after beating the game, taking all routes, and unlocking Doki Doki Carnival..this is where the game just stops. Of all the Gal Gun games that I've played, Double Peace is the better choice out of the three that I've played. GGR was fun for what it was worth in the story mode, but DDC mode feels rather slow and just unnecessary as a challenge mode. I'd rather the minigames as an unlock over that, but if it does set things up for the next game, it's a necessary evil but I digress. What could've helped was you getting power ups in that mode to give you more time, make your shots more powerful or just gave you a special radar of sorts to show you weaknesses. I mean I get that it's a rail shooter, but usually they give players a bit of a reward for clearing a stage.
I would say if you like Gal Gun, in order..get Double Peace, and the side game too, 2's okay I suppose but Returns is rather 50/50 at best. Least I can say I'm done with the game. I enjoy it for what it was worth and got off the ride when it got boring.

A cute ecchi rail shooter that could only have been a product of the PS3/Vita era. The mechanics are decent enough and the girls are plentiful and cute, there's one for every type and the variety of pantsu is downright monstrous. Unfortunately these kinds of games don't come out on Steam much anymore due to Valve's policy changes, so treasure them where you can find them.
The base price is a bit absurd though, the game goes on sale often/winds up in bundles enough if you're looking to pick it up.
