I came into Chicory expecting a light hearted coloring adventure game, but what I experienced was something more meaningful. If you have ever doubted yourself or the art you created, I think Chicory will resonate with you.

Underrated gem. It’s a painting game, and it may look like a game for toddlers, but it is one of the most connecting experiences I have ever had in a video game.
The gameplay is incredibly fun, and the music is AMAZING (Lena Raine I kneel down at you), but the best part is by far the story. It has such a profound meaning and each character struggle feels real. Not only the main ones, but there are plenty of side stories that have deep messages with really heartwarming conclusions to them.
This is not just a game, it’s a therapy session. Enjoy playing while healing your heart. One of the best games I have ever played, I’m absolutely in love.

I was going to say the painting felt kinda pointless an adult but then I found myself trying my darnedest to paint Chicory, so I'm the one who deserves a review because I definitely got played

As someone who has always been too scared of not being good enough to create art, this game has spoken to me in a way no other has in my entire lifetime, especially because I purchased and started playing it while going through my last year of high school, right as I was getting my first art classes since kindergarten, and believe me, it was hard to convince myself I was worthy of trying, and I highly doubt I would have managed to do so had I not found this game, with all of its ups and downs, touching on mental health, depression, and some of the struggles people face when trying to create something, without being boring or overwhelming for the player, and all of this happens through the eyes of a little dog called Pizza (in my case hamburger =D ) that's just trying to not let Chicory down. I won't spoil the story for anyone who has yet to play this game. Still, if it helps, this experience brought me laughter, excitement, and fear and even made tears roll down my face during some of the darker segments of it, out of all of the games I've played, I'd say this one has an uncanny ability to transmit strong emotions that is on par with that of Undertale or Omori.
The game itself is incredibly fun with all of its different game mechanics and keeps itself refreshing by introducing more complex ones as it progresses, while at the same time, it allows the player incredible freedom on the play-style they choose to use, ranging from the super-efficient one that can't wait to get all of the achievements as fast as possible by just drawing a few calculated lines here and there, all the way to the details-oriented player that wishes to fill in every single corner of the map in a thoughtful arrangement of colors, I personally was trying to get things to look nice without overthinking too much. Another thing that I found absolutely superb in the game is the overall art style and music, which was composed by Lena Raine, and does an excellent job of being meaningful while blending in with the game in such a way that it becomes one with the landscape rather than being "on top" of it, if that makes any sense.
soundtrack 10/10
art 10/10
gameplay 10/10
Thanks to everyone who worked on this masterpiece, you changed my life.

The music is by Lena Raine, i don't really know if i need to say much more tbh.
The only thing is the controls can take a lot of getting used to, i used both a controller and mouse for the most natural feeling, but it can be a bit weird. Otherwise beautiful game and everyone who made it should be proud on making such an interesting and innovative experience.

Chicory is a unique feel-good puzzle platformer about bringing color to a black-and-white world. Playing this game with a controller is a significant handicap, but the overall difficulty is so low it didn't matter. Coloring in the world is immensely satisfying, and almost all of the finicky drawing sections are optional. I do not have the gene for visual art, but the game makes coloring very accessible while still allowing for higher-order art if that's something you enjoy.
Unlocking new abilities and exploring the world was great fun, and most of the puzzles were engaging. Boss fights are really creative and visually stunning, although a couple of them are so gruesome and nightmarish that I can't imagine a child playing them. It's a real shame, because otherwise this is very much a sophisticated game for modern children, with a lot of room for player expression and optional secrets.
The game is well-written, but I would have liked a few more "quirky" characters (Pickle is the MVP). The message of the game is beautiful and heartwarming, but it misses the mark a bit by over-indulging in dialogue. For a game that is so diagetically unique and compelling, you really don't need to underline every theme over and over again. If a picture is worth a thousand words, you don't also need a thousand words to explain it.
