It's the game with the "hug" button.
‘nough said.
Melts my heart every time I hug the blob.
First of all. yes. This game has a hug button and it's the most adorable thing ever. Never made it very far the first time I played though because I was busy hugging my blob.
A Boy and His Blob on is awesome. If you like puzzle platformers and really cute 2D art, it is a delight. I played the NES one with my Dad. He wasn’t a big video game guy but for some reason he got sucked in by the art. He passed away a few months ago so I DEFINITELY was not be able to get through this without blubbering like a baby. Such a great game with an interesting and unique concept! But it was so hard! Even as an adult, I could barely make progress. This one though is a port of the Wii version. The Wii version managed to capture a lot of the charm from the original with plenty of call backs to the original. And this version was challenging without being nearly as hard as the original.
I really enjoyed this retelling of the original and the hand drawn artstyle is really great, genuinely beautiful to look at. The wonderful graphics and smooth animations make this a beautiful game to play. The pace is rather slow, more focused on solving puzzles than hard-packed action. All the different things The Blob can turn into are really cool, he can even turn into a cannon. Each of the transformations allow you to solve puzzles and navigate through each area.
The game takes place in a series of individual levels where you have certain blob transformation abilities (up to 8) and unlimited jellybeans to use unlike the original where you could play for hours and realize that you were stuck because you ran out of licorice jellybeans. Trust me, this change is for the better. The gameplay reminds me of other platformers like Mario Brothers and Sonic, albeit with more of a puzzle element to it and better graphics. For most of the puzzles you can take your time and figure out what you need to do without worrying about enemies attacking. It should be noted that the puzzles are not at all difficult, so if you're looking for a game with difficult puzzle solving, this game won't provide that, but it is still provides a great time.
Most levels in all four worlds follow the same mechanic: guide the boy and his blob through a level while having Blob collect 3 treasure chests. You have to use the different shapes Blob can take, objects from your surroundings and the boy himself to solve the increasingly challenging puzzles. At the end of each world you'll have to fight a Boss, but these are relatively easy to play once you find out the weakness of each boss. When you finish a level with all three chests found, you can play a bonus "challenge" level. The challenge being that you usually can use only one or two Blob-shapes. That makes the puzzles in these levels less intricate, they are more about skill and timing.
The whole game has a very charming feel to it, as well. The hand-drawn characters are cute, and the blob's forms and animations are also very cute, if sometimes goofy. Like I’ve said there's even a button to give him a hug; it serves no purpose, but definitely adds to the charm. The music is orchestral, and while it's nothing you'll be jamming out to as you cruise down the highway, it all fits well enough, and it does have the main theme from the original game. Not much story, not that you need it, but it's all told in short cutscenes with no actual dialogue, so it's something you can enjoy regardless of age or language barrier.
All in all a fun game for a few hours of not-too-difficult gaming. I really enjoyed it. It's not particularly difficult, but it's satisfying and the art direction is good and the relationship between the boy and his blob is really interesting. If you enjoy 2D side-scrolling puzzle platformers, this game is definitely worth the asking price. I only wish my father had been here to play it with me. I’d love to hug him as I hugged the blob.

I first played this back on the Wii and it's the same game. This is an adorable puzzle platformer and isn't too hard or obtuse for the most part, though Challenge Level 4-2 can cause troubles (Hint: the ladder goes down if the platform is above you and the cannon can blow up exploding enemies if they touch it right).
It's not the best game ever or overly long at 40 regular levels and 40 challenge levels, but you get to hug the blob. You get to hug the blob. :3
BTW, the devs originally required you to hug the blob periodically to keep the blob's mood up, but that didn't test well, so they just left the hugs in because cuteness.

10/10 game. It was my favorite as a kid, and I wish I could give the devs a hug. just 100%ed it in about 20 hours, but i did know most of the puzzles.

A simple, gorgeous, sweet platformer. More games should have a dedicated hug button.

I kinda liked it, yes its too simple for a 30 year old gamer but it is one of the games that you can play & chill

Cute game but definitely for kids. Not my kind of game but well made.
Be sure to check controller settings and compatibility in Steam settings as it's a bit outdated now.

This is a fantastic remake of the almost-but-not-quite classic for the NES. The original Boy and His Blob was, despite it's cutesy appearance, super punishing, often requiring pixel perfect platforming despite sluggish movement. Sometimes, you could do everything right, only to call your blob over and have him push you into the water or a bed of spikes! Still, the game was unique for the time, and managed to sell enough to get a sequel on game boy.
Fast forward 20 or so years later, and we get a remake from WayForward, who were clearly fans of the original. This is the rare kind of remake that actually understood the appeal of the first game, and gave it a new, beautiful coat of paint. Rather than one continuous level, the game is broken up into mini-levels, but across multiple worlds. I have mixed feelings about this change, as well as the inability to use all the collected jellybeans at any time; instead you are limited to only those jellybeans that will be useful in the level. It's obvious that this game was made for kids, and you will notice plenty of hand-holding in the earlier levels. However, the difficulty does start to ramp up toward the end of the first world, so fans of the original probably won't be bored. This version of the game also gets extra points for the charming presentation; it's nothing groundbreaking compared to the NES version, but is just so much more user friendly overall (with the possible exception of the boss rooms). If you have any nostalgia at all for the original game, or just want a breezy platformer to kill some time, I'd definitely recommend checking this out.
