This is the first ever Soulcalibur I have played and I'm not even completely sure why I am reviewing this, since I only have a really vague understanding of what makes a fighting game good.
I only actually got and played this game because I got it for 5 bucks on sale. What I understand from the bit I played is that it is a weapon focused fighting game with big emphasis on weapon focused, like the entire lore seems to revolve around magical swords and the late 16th century for some reason. If you really like this story, I'm sorry in advance for saying this, and I'm definitely poking a hornet’s nest here, but I found the story very goofy and I ended up skipping all of it after a while. Like I already said, I'm not that experienced with fighting games, but I did play a few of the Mortal Kombat titles and while the story in Mortal Kombat also has its fair share of “interesting" writing, I found it a lot better than this story.
The fighting itself was really fun though. The difficulty scales well during the campaign, from being very easy in the start, but gradually becoming harder and harder, especially for a casual like me. I did learn some of the combos, which were cool I guess, but I also did a lot of button mashing.
There are also quite a few different characters, though I only got to meet some of them. My favorite is probably Sophitia, for more than one reason.
The character creator is also pretty cool, there is quite a lot of clothing and haircut options to choose from and it honestly surprised me a bit that this game has one, I don’t think I have seen that in a fighting game before or at least not with this many choices.
I have no idea if this is considered a good Soulcalibur or not, but I got this for 5 bucks, which to me is a good deal and I’ll definitely recommend it at that price. This is not a game I'm gonna sink hundreds of hours into, but I did enjoy the bit I played. Again, I don’t play many fighting games and I also don’t play a lot of Japanese titles, so if you play a lot of those, just disregard my opinion about this game I guess.

Yes it is a good game.
For me SC2 has always been the favorite. Gamecube version. During the years i had the opportunity to check on titles here in between but did not like them much and always went back to the 2nd game. As for SC6 this is now to me the SC 'baseline' and from here on i will compare new games - if any come - against this game.
It is so good overall even though cons do exist. Reverse Edge mechanic that seems like it was added in the last minute to attract more new players is just that: extra fluff that i try to avoid as i dont get this paper, rock, scissors kind of engagement at all as it stops the action and drags matches on when reversals connect many times in fight.
And the DLC structure got a bit of nickel and dime thing going on, particularly the creation sets is just horrible as nothing is ever more than -50% on sale. But the base game now during sales at 5.99 is just a crazy steal. Why on earth don't you have it yet?
No need to fret about DLC characters even though fans pour out their anger in the reviews for some. I have purchased a few and the rest...well, maybe. But it's perfectly fine without them as well. I'd say buy them if you are interested in the characters and their story missions. 2,49 and 2,99 average sales prices for each is okay i guess.

Posting a review for this game today is like posting a review for a discontinued menu item from chili's that hasn't been served for 3 years, but what the hell. I love this game. I love it with an absolute passion. I haven't stopped playing it since I bought it, you can see my hours.
My favorite thing about it is the character creation mode. This game has one of the best character creation systems I've ever used. The body morphing is spectacular, you can make anything from a skinny stick of a person to an enormous muscle-bound man(or woman) tank, to a literal sumo wrestler. You can make their skin whatever color you like. You can individually color almost everything using one of those RGB map things, you can add textures to costume pieces like scales or a floral pattern or fleur de lis, and add stickers to most surfaces. You can add and reshape and resize various objects anywhere on the character at all, there's a reason this game has been used to recreate basically every fictional character under the sun. I've got every save slot available filled with a character save for two, and there is a LOT of slots. I've made the greek pantheon, I've made wonder woman, Gambit from xmen, nightwing, a TON of original characters. If you like character creation, you owe it to yourself to try this game.
One good thing I LOVE that they've finally added is the ability to toggle which parts of the outfit are breakable. In Soulcalibur there is a mechanic for breaking armor pieces if you do enough damage to either the top, middle, or bottom of the character. Usually the change is pretty minor, a shoulder pad here, a ripped up robe there. But with custom characters, parts will break off completely and you'd often be left with an abomination as outfit parts that were key to their appearance are just gone. Think, the custom head you've crafted using various parts is now all gone. Or worse, half gone. Thankfully now they've added a toggle for whether either the top, middle, or bottom parts will break, the toggle is individual. So you can still have, say, the character lose their helmet, but not the rest of the outfit, as is often my preference. Complete gamechanger for me, so glad it's in the game now.
Then there's the combat. The thing the game purports to be about. I don't play online much if at all, to be honest I prefer to make unique characters and try them out in offline matches. It's pretty addicting to me. I can really get lost in it, just playing match after match after match. Whenever I need something to occupy my mind I just kind of go into the "zone" and play a bunch. I wish I knew more accurate lingo for fighting game stuff but I'm just not a pro fighting game player. I do pretty much just smash bros and SoulCal, and I'm not into the competitive scene at all, so if you want someone with an in depth look at the combat, I'm afraid you'll have to look somewhere else.
The story mode. It can be a little confusing. it's basically one long timeline full of events happening simultaneously across every playable character, so you kind of have to put together the whole picture yourself, it can definitely be a bit daunting. Then there's the mode where you create a custom character to go in your own story. It's this sort of rpgish game mode, where you unlock equipment and levels and stuff. There's a story with side quests, various locations you can visit like points on a little world map. You meet the main characters of the game in an organic way as you travel. It's a pretty fun time, and being able to make a character of your own is always going to be a plus for me.
The online scene? Dead. Deader than dirt. you can find matches sometimes but not a whole ton, it's not like there's NOBODY but a thriving community it is not. However, as I've stated over the course of this review, that is not where the appeal of the game is for me.
To me the SoulCalibur series has always been a creative outlet. I've been making characters in SoulCal since IV back in the xbox 360. If that's the sort of thing you're looking for, here, have a blast, the creator is right up there for me along with the sims games and Saints Row. (not that one.) If you're looking for a competitive scene I... would look elsewhere personally but I'm not the authority on that.

You will need two things to have the complete game,
Deluxe Edition
Season Pass 2
BUY ON SALE ONLY
Game is totally worth it (on sale)
I have been playing the series since the first game, Soul Blade
Game is a boatload of fun, even moreso with your own custom characters, only thing they did wrong is Reversal Edge and not bringing back custom character only move sets from SoulCalibur 3

I made fat Sasuke, Mr Clean, Doug Dimmadome, Neckbeard Weeb, Hitler, Smegma Titan, and a very kinky Roman dude. I love this game
