Fox Girls Never Play Dirty is a compact turn-based RPG that embraces the familiar structure of classic Japanese role-playing adventures while giving its story an unusual mixture of fantasy, crime, humor, and political unrest. Developed by AVANTGARDE and published by Kagura Games, the game follows Ryunosuke, a traveler visiting the country of Stivale several years after a destructive world war. His supposedly ordinary journey changes dramatically after meeting Serena, an energetic fox girl whose actions quickly put him in conflict with local authorities. Rather than escaping the situation, Ryunosuke decides to accompany her, becoming involved in her campaign against the mafia and her ambitious effort to change the troubled nation.
The story is easily one of the game's more distinctive qualities. Stivale is presented as a country still dealing with the consequences of war, creating a surprisingly serious background for an adventure populated by colorful characters and humorous situations. Serena's struggle against organized crime provides the main motivation for moving forward, while Ryunosuke serves as the outsider gradually drawn deeper into the conflict. Their contrasting circumstances help keep the narrative lively. Although the game does not attempt the enormous narrative complexity of a large-scale RPG, its strange combination of fox girls, police trouble, criminal organizations, and national reform gives the adventure a recognizable personality.
Combat follows a traditional turn-based format. Players select actions, use character abilities, manage resources, and defeat enemies to continue progressing through the story. There is little attempt to radically reinvent the genre, which can either be appealing or disappointing depending on expectations. Players who enjoy straightforward RPG battles should appreciate how quickly the mechanics become understandable. Encounters emphasize character statistics and sensible skill usage rather than demanding complicated real-time execution.
Progression reinforces that accessible design. Characters become stronger through leveling and gain access to skills that expand their options in battle. The resulting gameplay loop is familiar but dependable: explore new areas, encounter enemies, earn experience, improve the party, and prepare for stronger opposition. There is a pleasant sense of gradual advancement without burying the player underneath excessive layers of customization. Players who prefer extremely elaborate builds may consider the system somewhat limited, but the simplicity helps maintain a comfortable pace.
Exploration serves as the bridge between narrative sequences and combat. Moving through Stivale gradually reveals more about Serena's mission and the problems affecting the country. The world is not designed as a massive open environment, so expectations should remain focused on a comparatively traditional and directed RPG experience. This more controlled structure benefits the pacing because objectives remain understandable and the adventure rarely becomes overwhelmed by unnecessary systems. The game also contains mature themes and strong language, making its tone more adult than its colorful anime-inspired visuals might initially suggest.
Presentation is built around 2D artwork and a recognizable Japanese indie RPG aesthetic. Character designs provide much of the visual identity, particularly Serena's fox-girl appearance, while environments and combat presentation remain functional rather than technically extravagant. This style fits the scale of the project and allows the characters and dialogue to remain at the center of the experience. Japanese voice audio further complements the presentation, while translated interface and subtitle options make the story accessible to a wider audience.
From a technical perspective, the modest graphical style means the game does not require particularly demanding computer hardware. Its official requirements nevertheless acknowledge that some lag may occur when loading maps or menus, so occasional performance imperfections should not necessarily be surprising. Steam Cloud support is convenient for maintaining progress between systems, and Trading Cards provide a small additional feature for players interested in Steam collectibles.
Steam Deck compatibility is a notable advantage. The game is officially Steam Deck Verified, with its core functionality working through the handheld's controls and its interface remaining usable on the smaller display. Controller prompts and general navigation are appropriately supported, while the game can run using settings suitable for the device. Its viewpoint and methodical pacing also translate naturally to portable play, although demanding visual settings can still make sensible performance adjustments worthwhile for players prioritizing battery life or consistent performance.
The main weakness is that players looking for deep mechanical experimentation may find the RPG systems too conventional. Combat, leveling, skills, and exploration largely follow established genre formulas. Its strength lies instead in how those familiar systems support a more unusual story. The combination of a carefree traveler, a determined fox girl, postwar instability, law enforcement, and mafia opposition gives an otherwise straightforward RPG a considerably more memorable premise.
Fox Girls Never Play Dirty ultimately works best for players who appreciate smaller anime-style RPGs with traditional turn-based mechanics and character-focused storytelling. It does not need complicated systems or cutting-edge technology to establish its identity. Its accessible progression, unusual narrative setup, colorful protagonist pairing, and straightforward combat make it an entertaining genre experience, even if its mechanics rarely venture beyond familiar territory. Players comfortable with its modest scope should find a focused adventure that understands exactly what kind of RPG it wants to be.

A small gem of an eroge
A serious, well thought out story with an absurd hentai fantasy premise, packed with unique encounters, original characters and dirty jokes.
For a story that is supposed to be 10 hours long (maybe without the patch, heh), it never felt boring. But as you can see from my playtime, this game A LOT of... alternative content. Too many events to count, several endings based on your relationship with the 2 heroines (I've explored ALL of them... for science, and they were worth the time!).
The erotic events feel perfectly exhaustive. There's one wherever you'd expect one to be, and they all get pretty passionate. Their implementation is what elevates Fox Girls Never Play Dirty from a mere RPG with an original but simple story to a thrilling action packed experience.
The only thing I would have liked was more time with the side girls - *cough* Maya *cough*
