RetroGunX VR
Before the modern games of today, games were simple, uncluttered with special effects, easy to play, difficult to master, and the goal for the most part was to simply survive. RetroGunX is just that!
Take a nostalgic trip down memory lane in this first person arcade shooter game in VIRTUAL REALITY. Blast your way though unique waves of enemies and mega bosses, each with their own strategy to defeat you, as you fight to destroy the ominous presence known only as RedSkull, and claim your spot on the High Score Board. The game has a very clean and minimalistic approach to the art style, which is reminiscent of those classic 8-bit games from the 70s.
In RetroGunX, you truly feel like hero inside the game, literally. You know that feeling you get when you’re being watched? At any time, either during the main menu, high score screen or even during the game itself, look behind you to see a mysterious figure that not only watches your every move, but also controls your every move, though the arcade screen.

Updated Review 2/14/2019
I still stand by my original review. However, the fact that it's been in EA for this long without an update makes me have to knock it down a bit. It still is super fun & challenging, but the lack of updates and the grinding involved make me now say buy on deep, deep sale but then get an awesome game & deal. See my video review & gameplay here:
Original Review Below
I can't believe this game got a 90% discount and is currently $1.19 USD on the Black Friday deal. It is so much fun. And it's actually one of the best wave shooters in VR currently. It stands out in a very crowded genre for VR. I know this may sound like heresy to some, but I enjoyed RetroGunX VR way more than I ever enjoyed Space Pirate Trainer (although maybe that's because I only started VR this past summer so I'm late to the VR world when SPT was THE game to play). by the way, I do think SPT is a good game, just not as good as this one
So what makes RetroGunX VR so special? I'm glad you asked or at least read it out in your mind and didn't know you were asking. Well, let me tell you the answer. This game is special because each wave is unique. This isn't some flying drone flying around at varying speeds and aimlessly at times and each wave just brings more of them. That stuff don't fly in this game. Each wave introduces a new enemy type that does very different things. Each enemy moves differently and has different attacks and attack patterns.
This game is not about climbing leaderboards (although it does have them). It's about progress. Finishing the game. In a way, it's like Galaga but unlike Galaga or classic arcade games, Those had endless waves of repetition, where it was about faster and more. This is about each wave bringing a new challenge. I would put this game up there with Blasters of the Universe. For $1.19 it's a must buy.
Sale Price Rating 10/10. Normal Price Rating 8/10.

Simple nostalgic fun
Retro Gun X remembers why we play games in the first place.. to have fun!!
While vr is still a new medium, many of developers spend a lot of time inventing clever ways to interact with their games.
This often leads to great innovations and clever mechanics.
Unfortunately, more often than not, it comes at the expense of the most important attribute of a game. Fun
Retro Gun X is not complex, innovative or ground-breaking. it is however.. FUN!
You can pick it up and blow of some pixelated steam, and put it down again, whenever you feel like it.
There isn't much of a story except "kill everyone" but you didn't come here for story, you came here to shoot things, and shoot things you shall.
Right off the bat, you are greeted by a pixelated angry red skull.
We are never told why he's angry, but apparently, killing you is important to him, so off we go.
From here on it's pure 8-bit nostalgia.
You battle childhood favourites like space invaders and paratroopers, reliving that simple button mashing adrenaline that cost your dad a few keyboards.
The developers captured what it would be like to be inside those games perfectly.
There are a few things that could use some work:
Blowing up enemies, could be more rewarding with bigger explosions.
Power-ups could add allot to this game, and the triggers could be set a tad lighter, but most of those crits are forgotten when I remember that for the price of a large pizza, I just stepped inside paratrooper.
Its one of those games you will probably keep installed in your library, because its always fun, and always a cool thing to load up when you want to show your friends how rad VR is.
Well done!!

Very impressive for an early proof of concept!
The current version is already a well made, immersive VR experience which hits all the right classic 80's arcade-game nostalgia notes and skillfully combines them with the more modern static first-person-shooter model.
The game obviously still has a lot of work needed but it has definite potential. Thankfully the developer has already shown an appreciation and eager willingness to engage with the player base and make use of their feedback to help improve the experience.
I, for one, will certainly be following the progression of this one with enthusiasm!

I was planning to play this for a quick 5 min on my first (and last) run, but ended up playing 30 min and it won't be my last run.
Two reasons to keep me going :
- To check out the next level(s).
- To unlock weapons and weapon upgrades (good luck maxing all upgrades), which will help me reach those next levels I want to see.
More then a game, the developpers have designed a game engine that makes it easy to create more content (lack of content being VR's typical weakpoint), and when they say they're planning to add 40+ MORE levels to the current 22 levels (including more boss levels), as well as ~6 more weapons... I totally believe that they can.
And by 40+ more levels, understand that each level is different : You don't go shooting the same wave twice.
This is what retro VR games would have looked like if retro VR had existed : If you're into retro games, you might actually love this.
As for the pricing : Once they've reached 60+ levels it will be like buying a few dozen wave shooters for ~20 cents each (less then a quarter), in a bundle worth buying, that you can chain without any downtime.
And yes : I own Space Pirate Trainer. I'm tempted to say Space Pirate Trainer is the game I am more likely to show my friends, while RetroGunX is the game I am more likely to play for myself. In Space Pirate Trainer the same enemies keep repeating a lot, the unlockable content is cosmetic and the goal is to beat the game score. In RetroGunX the enemies don't repeat, the attack patterns can vary widely, and the goal is to unlock and upgrade the weapons to make it easier to finish checking out every level in all their diversity. In Space Pirate Trainer I tend to stick to my guns during whole waves, and use shield and room scale to dodge shots. In RetroGunX there is no shield, it makes sense to switch weapons during waves instead of only between waves due to their slow recharge time (without their upgrades unlocked), and you tend to shoot incoming shots rather then block them or dodge them... so I have no problem owning and playing both, one for it's graphics and the other for it's gameplay.

If you love Atari 2600 / Intellivision / Colecovision, you will love this game. Try it, and you'll see and hear for yourself. The sound effects and graphics are so totally evocative of that era. It's basically like playing those consoles, but in VR.

RetroGunX is a chance to step into the arcade days of old. Fight off the space invaders and centipede monsters while making sure no paratroopers rush you from behind. It's bright colourful graphics and 8 bit sounds style are fun and refreshing, and although a wave shooter - every wave has completely different enemies. Check out the video review for more info

I really like it! It really catches and delivers the style, feel and sound of those old arcade machines. I see lots of potential, looking forward to any updates!
