Subnautica is a template for what open-world survival games should strive to be.
It’s fantastical, fresh, and frightening from surface to seabed, with a story that kept on surprising me and a cast of sea monsters that quite literally haunted my dreams.

One of the best games I've ever played in my life. Graphics, beautiful, the quality of the music and sound, absolutely amazing. Play the game, it's worth your time and money. Bravo, Subnautica.

They understand the wonder and terror of the ocean. There is always a bigger fish, and the ocean is infinite.
More grounded and less poetic: its a stellar game, S-tier. If you've gotten this far in life and haven't heard of it, played it or own it, well, you're in for a treat. Open world survival craft of aquatic design, you have to start from nothing, build up resources, unlock new equipment, explore more hidden and deeper depths and help cure a plague while you try to survive and escape.
Ambient sound and music is incredible, the animal noises are all distinctive, varied and will condition you into specific responses. (You will know the Reaper's roar soon enough). Lots of places to explore, lots of verticality afforded by being underwater and being able to go through tunnels, caves and trenches in 6DOF.
I wish I could forget everything I know about the game to experience it anew. There are some mods out there and more coming too, which should increase playablitly and replayability. I've done several runs and still want more.
Fear and respect the ocean and its denizens. Master your terror of the dark, the depths, the unknown, the gargantuan. Come play Subnautica.

Under any circumstances, read any guides for this game. Any hint, no matter how minor, will ruin your enjoyment of this game. You have been warned. The world is not randomly generated like most survival games. Keep exploring, and you will succeed. Wondering what is going on and what to do next is what this game is all about.
The game is well balanced, and has an astounding atmosphere. Every new discovery gives you a sense of accomplishment that very few games deliver.
The only thing that is bad about this game, is that it ends. Replay value will be low for most people. It does have a hardcore mode, which may not be everyone's cup of tea.
Please, if you read this review, rate. It's not that I care about the ratings, I just want people to be aware of potentially ruining their experience by reading spoilers.
I am a long time gamer, and Subnautica is simply one of the best games I ever played. This is coming from a person that absolutely hates the water and can not swim in real life.
