"Underdog Detective" transports you to the vibrant and tumultuous world of ancient China under the reign of Empress Wu Zetian, offering an engaging blend of humor, mystery, and historical intrigue. Here's why this game stands out:
Narrative and Setting:
Set in the imperial capital of Luoyang, the game's story starts with you, a clever slum dweller with a knack for antiques and magical arts, thrust into a web of conspiracies. The narrative is both thrilling and comedic, providing a fresh take on detective games with its unique setting and character development. The adaptation from the popular Chinese TV series "Luoyang" adds layers to the storyline, making it appealing to both fans of the series and newcomers.
Gameplay:
Puzzles and Traps: The game does an excellent job with its puzzles, which are challenging yet fair. They require not just logic but also an understanding of the game's lore, enhancing immersion.
Quick Time Events (QTEs): These add a dynamic layer to the gameplay, making each action feel impactful. The QTEs are well-executed, providing a cinematic feel to crucial moments in the story.
Reflection System: This innovative feature allows players to piece together clues in a visual manner, making detective work not only fun but also creatively stimulating. It's a standout mechanic that differentiates "Underdog Detective" from other narrative-driven games.
Visuals and Audio:
The first-person perspective immerses you into the ancient world of Luoyang with stunning visuals that bring the bustling, chaotic city to life. The soundtrack complements the game's mood excellently, switching from light-hearted to intense as the narrative demands.
Decision Making:
Your choices genuinely shape the game's outcome, offering multiple endings that encourage replayability. The game's moral and strategic dilemmas are well-crafted, making you feel like your decisions have weight and consequence.
Critiques:
Some might find the humor doesn't always land due to cultural nuances, which can slightly detract from the experience for non-Chinese audiences.
The pacing can occasionally feel uneven, with some investigative segments dragging longer than necessary.
Conclusion:
"Underdog Detective" is a delightful mix of detective work, historical setting, and personal journey. It's a must-play for those who enjoy narrative-driven games with a touch of humor and a lot of heart. The game's unique mechanics, combined with its engaging story, make it a memorable adventure that leaves you pondering your choices long after the credits roll. Highly recommended for fans of mystery, history, and interactive storytelling.

This is a short introduction (episode 1 to 5) to a much large part of the story, which you have to purchase seperately in a DLC. I would still recommend it however. The story and acting is a bit cheesy, but the production value is pretty high and some of the actors and actresses really knock it out of the ballpark.

A great FMV experience. At times it made me laugh, at other times it kept pulling me in with its intriguing story. It had a few surprising twists and overall turned out to be much longer and richer than I initially expected, with a story and cast of characters that expanded nicely throughout. Definitely worth the time!

pretty decent FMV game Chinese drama style. Plot wise the build up falls short and the choices are fairly linear except for the ending. Still worth a shot if it's cheap or on sale.

With shocking effectiveness, UD combines world-class filmmaking with the simple bread-and-butter of narrative games: conversation trees, QTEs, a dozen or so minigames, and a few "systems" with fancy UI. Even as it dazzles you with its production values, it maintains a strong focus on interactivity, especially compared to cousins-in-genre like The Walking Dead Ace Attorney. My favorite moments involve both gameplay and cinema. Chief among these was a drinking minigame, which nauseated me with its live-action footage to a degree that might not be possible with real time graphics.
Please check out this extraordinary work of entertainment!

good fmv, the first part 1-5 worth the money for the entertainment, puzzles and clues make you think.
english translation of fmv is very good. cast are very likeable and none of it seems forced, smooth flow to the story (1-5).
the dlc for the remaining story a little expensive though (i have not bought), would bring the full story total cost to 20 ... which is double what other full fmvs cost.
so i recommend parts 1-5, and leave it down everyone elses judgement if the rest (parts 6-17) are worth the cost

This is perhaps the most hilarious game and at the same time most serious game, i have played on steam. I completed the game in 6.7 hrs but i suspect that i have not caught the actual culprit. I will try again.
Acting by the protagonist and NPCs are excellent and the costume, set and locations are excellent and i never felt that this FMV suffered from any budgetary constraints. Voice is in Chinese but there is English subtitle. I feel this FMV is part of some movie which has been converted to FMV, for steam.
