The foreigner is a short virtual novel about the misadventure of a poor boy and kind lady.
Disclaimer - As this game is not in English, I cannot provide an accurate translation of its content. I can, however try my best to describe it. As I am not the target audience, my review should be taken with a grain of salt.
Game-play
There is no meaningful game-play in this title. I didn't encounter any choices that I can select. Think of this game as a book. It's a thing you read, and there is no adventure to choose. The adventure has already been chosen. Just hit the "enter" key as you finish reading (or in my case, looking).
Story
I am clueless about the story. Shortly after booting this software and whipping out my trusty phone (and Google Translate), I figured I was in for a wild ride.
Sometimes, Google Translate sucks.
So, my understanding of the story is basically guesses. So let's get started! We are introduced a rogue-looking fellow, a boy who looks like some-sort of a thief. He holds a blade up to a bathing lady, who happens to be a very nice bathing lady. The two end-up dining together, and she dresses the boy.
I get it! The boy must be a victim of circumstance, and the lady some sweet soul.
They share a gobs n' gobs of conversation, which I assume is bonding. Good ol' bonding. After watching the moon and bedding together, they set-off for an adventure. Eventually, they wind-up in some broken down house. Perhaps, this is where our boy-friend came from. It appears long-abandoned. And then. . .
There is tradgedy. All good things must come to an end, I suppose. I'll leave the remainder of the story for you to discover.
Visuals
The artwork in this game is good, though hardly varied. You will see the same backgrounds time-'n-time again, and there is but a handful or two of full-images. There are only two characters, which means you won't be seeing too many faces. I guess you could say that the developers went for quality over quantity.
There is in-fact mild gore (imagery), but beyond implied nudity, nothing sexual.
Verdict
If you can't read. . . Chinese, don't by this. But if you can, I suspect that this is a nice little story to read. The menu is fleshed-out, and there's a lot of dialogue, The art is good, and you can easily review the gallery and soundtrack as you wish. From what I've read (on the Steam store page), this game appears to be a labor of love. If you want to support the developers (and those who died during production of this game), drop a dollar and pick up this story.
Just make sure you can read Chinese, or have a good Chinese-speaking friend.
