True Fear: Forsaken Souls Part 2
True Fear: Forsaken Souls Part 2 is the sequel to one of the best rated horror escape games, acclaimed for its story and the atmosphere of horror mystery. Holly Stonehouse followed the clues from her old family house to finally arrive at the Dark Falls Asylum and again see that someone was there before her, waiting for her. However this time she is no longer a spectator and what follows her is no longer just a shadow – the danger is real as the Asylum comes alive at night. Collecting clues, going through notes and photographs, unlocking devious puzzles and constructing complex chains of adventure actions, help Holly escape the night and find the answers. Was her mother crazy or was there really another sister? Did her mother commit suicide? How could Dahlia “come back” after the fire and who or what is the terrifying thing that Holly saw at Heather's house and that kept following her ever since?

Part 2 of the “True Fear: Forsaken Souls” trilogy has exploded my expectations for the hidden object adventure game subgenre. It's now one of my favorites I've played. I recognized the complexity of the gameplay and story in Part 1, but the second game takes this even further - much further!
It's to the point where I wondered why these developers didn't go ahead and make a fully-fledged adventure game. They accomplished so much in TF Pt.2, that they're already 70% of the way there!
To illustrate how different and epic this game is compared to other HOAGs, I'll tell you that I received an item in the first 30 minutes of the game, which remained in my inventory and was only used seven hours later.
Also at the beginning of the game, there's an inaccessible area that has an obvious solution for how to get to it. It intrigued me for the next five or six hours until I finally found the item needed to pass through. I love that the game's design has these kinds of "teases," and it made me motivated to keep moving forward.
Like Part 1, TF Pt.2 is structured around exploring a single large location. The Dark Falls Asylum opens up as you make progress. You will learn the meaning of "backtracking" like never before. The expanse of the playable area is huge, so it's a lot to remember. Fortunately, there's plenty of flavor text that often provides subtle or direct hints about what to do.
Even so, there were moments where I got legitimately stuck and looked at a video walkthrough. The game definitely has some obscure interactions that I didn't expect.
While going through this stylized art deco insane asylum, there are creepy events, and even some jump scares, to keep the feelings of horror and tension. Many cutscenes play through the game, which are surprisingly effective despite their PS3-level graphics.
This game even has real-time 3D rendering for some scenes! I haven't seen that in a HOAG since Melissa K. and the Heart of Gold. (Which I DO NOT recommend!)
When I finished the game, I got about six achievements blowing me up at once, which was kind of satisfying heheh. I noticed I was missing just two achievements, one of which was for finding all hidden collectibles. As I considered this, I got a funny idea... and I was right that the final collectible I needed was in a very clever location that you wouldn't expect.
The last achievement is just leaving the game running for three hours. It's dumb, but whatever. I'll leave it overnight and "earn" myself another Perfect Game on Steam.
I have it on good authority that “True Fear: Forsaken Souls Part 3” is nearing completion. You better believe I'll buy it on launch and see what these amazing developers come up with next!

Incredible production value for a game of this genre. While lacking a lot of the scares of the first one, I actually much [preferred the tense atmosphere and the more disturbing ideas thrown around through the use of the very appreciated evidence section!

The best HOG I have ever played, hands down. Music, story, voice acting, atmosphere, puzzles... all of it was so well done! Highly, highly recommended. (Only negative is it doesn't actually have any true hidden object screens. But the game shines without them.)
