I don't write reviews much so apologies in advance.
My first impressions of Tri-Star are positive for the most part since it takes the feeling of old arcade horizontal shooters but with adding a bit of fun extra flavor to it.
Every new run you can pick 3 ships to use for your play through all with their own unique style of bullet patterns and specials/bomb types. There is also a "warp/blink" that has it's own resource charge bar helping to add some fun movement to the game.
You can earn money for upgrades and items from destroying enemies and asteroids etc. which I think is a good incentive for kills rather than it just count as points to help get a new high score. Each ship is different so you're able to upgrade them all with how you want granted you have the resources. There are unlockables in the game too like new items and ships adding to the replay value.
Overall the game is simple enough yet the difficulty I feel is in a good middle for this type of game with the variety of enemy units and their attack patterns. A fun game to play for quick short breaks but includes long run goals like fully maxing out your ships or being top of the boards. The only thing I had a problem with was the backdrop feeling too distracting for me at times otherwise the game plays smooth.
Edited: As of 11/24/2021 - The dev added in a feature to turn down background brightness as well as a some other fun stuff like new unlockable ships :)

A solid shmup with good action, plenty of unlockables and a consistent challenge. The dev has been releasing regular updates with more content and features, and each one has made the game better and better.

Horizontal space shooter. Decent controls. Arcade style with interesting roguelike mechanic. Various ships and abilities to upgrade. Stylized presentation and okay audio. Some visibility issues.

If you are up for a challenge than this game is for you
Tri-Star was my introduction to the "bullet hell" genre and it is unforgiving to newcomers. What makes it difficult is the fact that after you die, your ship changes and so does its play-style/strategy. It makes it to where you aren't allowed to navigate your ship through a level based off memory since depending where you die, the next ship will make you approach waves of enemies differently. Depending how much of a challenge you want will very how much you will enjoy this game. If you are looking for something more casual like space invaders or galaga then I would stay away from this game. Like I said this game is for those who want a challenge.
