Rename the text file to Autoexec.cfg, replacing the .txt part and changing the file type. The game will load this automatically (hence autoexec) whenever the game is run and apply these settings at the start of every level. This also enables cheats, and this setup is required for enabling cheat codes.
Lines starting with "//" denote sections for easy modding. Feel free to change any values for a better experience.
Your game is now setup to run on modern systems and your lightsaber will dismember enemies (and allies) just by touching them. I recommend walking up to gunners and letting the auto-block swing the saber for stylish disarming.
I recommend setting quicksave and quickload as these levels have very few autosaves and they are triggered by volumes in the game world, so you can actually skip checkpoints without realizing. Quicksave often. Keep many individual saves. This game is old school.
Aside from that, go nuts. The missions are straightforward and will test your abilities as a jedi. No moral choices, except for the one that matters at the end. You can even use dark side powers without consequence. Some of the levels are unfair and frustrating, but you are a Jedi. You can do it.

Jedi Academy has the absolute best lightsaber combat of any game to date, would gladly buy a remade or remastered version of this game if it ever came to be.

Somehow still the best star wars game for saber combat.

In the broadest terms, this is the best Star Wars game ever. It does not have the storytelling of KOTOR II, nor the boundless force abilities of The Force Unleashed, or the fancy graphics of the newer games. But it lets you use a lightsaber in a way that no other Star Wars game has ever managed to really capture. There's a setting you can tweak in the game files that allows for complete dismemberment, making lightsaber fights into very serious affairs that can leave you or your foe cut into pieces. Which is to say nothing of the settings and the force abilities and platforming. It feels the same way as it does when you watch A New Hope or Revenge of the Sith.
It's my hope that a modder or someone with real talent in game creation can use the bones of this game to make a galaxy-crawling adventure game based on this engine where you can pilot a ship across the Star War Galaxy, picking up friends and solving problems or causing trouble. That's the only thing this game was really missing. Something Mount and Blade esque.
It's saddening that a 20 year old game figured this out better than EA can today. 10/10. It's cheap, and you'll have a great time.

A game from an era when lightsabers actually felt like lightsabers.

20 years later, and still no other videogame has ever come close to the lightsaber combat present in this game. Both this and Jedi Outcast are terrific games that are very similar to each other, this one being a sequel to Outcast and both released in the same year, but this one is the slightly better of the two, mostly because you get to use a lightsaber right from the very start. Level design is great, the story is passable, but it's the action you're here for and that's where this game really shines. Even 20 years later it's still a blast to play, and I wish we had more Star Wars games like this one.
