Star Control: Origins
Welcome Aboard Welcome to Star Control, Captain! You’re here because you’ve shown exemplary service, aced all your flight exams, and – most importantly – passed all the sanity tests. Humanity has learned that it is not alone in the universe and that we are hopelessly outmatched by alien civilizations seeking to destroy us. You have been selected to command Earth's first and only interstellar starship to accomplish this – try not to break it. It was expensive. Your mission: Save humanity, Captain. At all costs and by any means necessary. A Vast Universe Set in the year 2088, humanity has discovered it’s not alone in the universe. Worse yet, it is catastrophically unprepared to deal with what's out there. In response, Star Control is formed and the player is selected to command the crew of the U.E.S. Vindicator. Star Control: Origins takes place in a huge living universe just waiting to be explored.

It's kinda like Star Control II, only not quite as good.

This has quickly become one of my favorite games! The alien races (and even the starbase AI) are so unique and likeable, even the bad guys and the "smaller" races. Making first contact is a big part of the game, and they really make it enjoyable. The humor hits the right way for me. The gameplay is really fun, from exploring hyperspace to jumping around gathering resources on planets. The space battles aren't my favorite, but there's an automatic option that helps. But I love that you can see the aliens manning their ships. I haven't played the original games to compare, but I love this space opera! Recommended when it's on sale, gentle husk, so you can meet your new best friends, Biarm!

OK... finished the game and the Expansion. It is not like Star Control II is one of my favourite game so that's why I gave Origins a chance. Here are my critique:
- Planetary exploration - becomes a chore after a while. Hate getting stuck around terrain and some atmospheric conditions makes it very difficult to see things. There is almost no point capturing aliens.
- Overall, it was pretty easy which is fine but towards end game I just use one ship, combat becomes pretty boring.
- Story wise. Pretty forgettable. Ship upgrades should be reflected on the ship. They could do it in the past, why not now? Sometimes they go to alien full screen, other time, just text and icon with no voice. Better to keep it more consistent.
- Boss Battle. The climax battles seems to go on the background. Boss battles should be more in stages then just one arena.
- The economy kind of sucks because towards the end, I don't really need to buy anything. You also don't have as much customization as before in terms of crews, main ship weapons/features and even the rover.
Still I completed it and it satisfies a bit of nostalgia.
Overall, buy it when it is on sale, but I wouldn't pay full price for it.

Funny and in depth game with a little strategy, a little storytelling, a little guesswork, a little randomness and a lot of humour.

I've seen some criticism of this game, but honestly all things considered it's a pretty good attempt at re-creating what Star Control 2 was like as an experience for older players, to newer players.
Obviously SC2 didn't have a cartoony style, it was kinda left to your imagination. I don't know if you could do the same considering the expectations of modern gamers. The music is great, it's made by some of the same people as in the originals, though you can kinda see how they evolved as artists when they got older.
I'm sure some stuff could have been done better, but nobody's perfect. The story is interesting enough to keep you playing. Give it a shot.

I love how campy and silly the aliens can be and still tell a very good and serious story

While its no Star Control 2, it comes the closest of any game to scratching that itch, I like all the new alien races and the gameplay loop is addicting. My only real complaint is the lack of consistent quality of the side content and DLC.
