Boys will literally make a work of art about suffering instead of going to therapy

❝Black Heart.
It becomes black when touched by pain.
Yours isn't as black. Yet. But soon.
The pain saps your strength, yet it can give you more. It's up to you to decide what to do with it.
Is it really so bad for it to be black?
You can stop caring about others.
This opens many doors, you know.❞
Reviewing a game like this is always challenging, torn between shouting to the world about how fantastic it is and why it should absolutely be played, and preserving the experience and the joy of discovery for those who decide to purchase it.
It's a short game, around 4 hours, presented in 2D pixel art.
The gameplay strongly resembles a metroidvania, but not entirely, as the core of this experience isn't meant to be the gameplay itself.
Instead, it's the narrative that bring you in a dark, haunting world meticulously reconstructed with a superb soundtrack that guides you step by step through a story about pain, suffering, and remorse...
or maybe, it's a story about love?

A rich man asked a Zen master to write something down that could encourage the prosperity of his family for years to come. It would be something that the family could cherish for generations. On a large piece of paper, the master wrote, "Father dies, son dies, grandson dies."
The rich man became angry when he saw the master's work. "I asked you to write something down that could bring happiness and prosperity to my family. Why do you give me something depressing like this?"
"If your son should die before you," the master answered, "this would bring unbearable grief to your family. If your grandson should die before your son, this also would bring great sorrow. If your family, generation after generation, disappears in the order I have described, it will be the natural course of life. This is true happiness and prosperity."
Well this is a story about grief, pain and family. Just for the story and the art it is well worth playing. I don't want to spoil anymore. Play it.

This is a well made game. Very good ambiance, engaging puzzles that aren't too hard, great artwork.
Sometimes the dialogue feels a bit meh.
You may have to google 'inmost ending explained' because it wasn't clear enough for idiots like me.
Deals with some heavy topics (pro) but gets a bit preachy about them (con).
Game is about 3 hours long if you just run through, maybe 6 if you're careful to get all the secrets.
Music is pretty baller.
Overall I recommend. Just short of Almost Perfect
P.S. I encountered one glitch that broke the game and made me start over 10 min in and it sucked.

Inmost is a special game. It manages to create a dark story, while the game has few conversations in the beginning.
The three characters have simple controls, but differ enough from each other to keep it fresh.
The atmosphere remains beautiful and the music also contributes.
The game also works perfectly on a steam deck:
The gameplay takes place in a small and open world where all living creatures experience pain, and feeds on a creature that absorbs the world.
As for the visual component, there is reference to a variety of monochrome games, and this honors the classic retro titles.
And a certain color scheme is also assigned for each part of the world. But the world is more coherent thanks to a well-chosen color palette and a smooth transition.

INMOST is basically a PhD level thesis on the pain of living.
Do not play INMOST if you wish to laugh, or just waste a few hours. If you don’t game to think, learn and find answers, it may be best you pass INMOST by. I mean that in all seriousness, since I doubt you would enjoy playing.
By all means do play INMOST if you wish to grow emotionally and to understand what a lifetime of pain has taken from you, and what it has given you. INMOST wants players to know that no matter the cause or result, you can be larger than your pain.
I’ve never played a game quite like this, but I have absolutely lived a life just like this.
Thank you.
