I bought the complete version of this game for PC which runs at 60fps. Having bought and played this on PS4 version at 30fps, this PC version is a much better game. It is a departure from the traditional Dynasty warriors. It has an RPG style open world map of China in which you follow the stories of The Three Kingdoms from the perspective of the respective characters.
I believe if you play through the whole story, you unlock free mode, which then enables you, to play through all the stories with different characters, of which there are about 90.
I think the game is great, it's not perfect, it could have been better, but I enjoy it a lot more than some of the recent AAA games I have bought in recent times.
I would give it an 8 out of 10. Try the free demo and see what you think.
It's on sale at the moment, which is why I decided to repurchase it on PC.

As you can tell from other reviews, the combat and overall gameloop is much different than what each of the main numbered titles have provided. I agree that with the different "open world" approach to the design and simplified combat mechanics that this should have been named something different like 'Dynasty Warriors Conquest' or something instead of being marketed as the main numbered title.
That said, I played the Free version, then happily purchased the complete pack on sale and am having a great time playing it. I'm more of a casual Musou player anyway and the pacing for this game's chapters suit my playstyle.

This game is proof of why you can't always trust reviews. This is the best Musou game I've ever played.
-They did away with the mindless button mashing and made the combat far more enjoyable.
-The open world makes me feel like I'm conquering a map.
-Gathering is a welcome break from combat.
-Gems are a great way to customize your build.
-Leveling and stats allocation add a lot of freedom.
-Graphics and art style don't look cartoonish, which is excellent.
-If you learn your weapon, you can pull off some fun combos.
-Troops are not just decorative pawns for your enjoyment; they could hurt you if you play on higher difficulties.
Don't believe the negative reviews. This game is a gem.
Overall 8/10.

I don't understand all the negative reviews, this game is Epic.
It's a Musou with RPG mix, with a multitude of characters. I was new to Dynasty Warriors and found great that many of the characters have their unique point of view of the story through the cinematics throughout the chapters of which the different characters have a different start and end.
Instead of following the story missions, which are sometimes surprising in their mechanics, you can wander around and hunt for dreadful beasts, which you may capture to have them tamed as sidekicks.
Again, there are the negative reviews... but this game is one of the best that I've played!

This game has its issues, try the trial and see if its for you. The older games also have jank that gets forgotten about with nostalgia. I wish they would have improved it with time but they did minor fixes for complaints like the grappling hook and stopped, open world probably won't be on the table going forward because they didn't know how to do it properly in the first place then didn't even improve it much going forward with patches.
I could probably complain more but positives are needed I think. The open world aspect feels a bit better for the chapters since you can see where officers would be on the map of China instead of just in a custom field. If you enjoy 'painting the map' like I do you'll end up wasting too much time taking extra bases knowing they get reset at the next story chapter because its fun taking things over and 1 vs 1000 gameplay is enough for you.
Overall the game without bias is probably a 5/10 at best maybe. Me being biased I'd probably only go as high as 7/10 because I still acknowledge there's a lot of flaws but I overlook them. Definitely do the trial version to get a feel for the game first before you buy.

well .. when the game got released many people made negative reviews
for many reasons like the Traditional Chinese language wasnt there or something and the new open world system and some bugs and so
but with time they add and fixed many things but its still new system for the series as open world
i like the new open world even its some how empty but there is many places and animals and people in town and shops
you can fish , cook , climb towers and castles etc... there is co-op which is my fav part and also there is photo mode
and you can find many nice places and views and weathers for the photos also there is houses/hideaway and you can decorate it ...
now what happend to the series? well i never seen dynasty warriors become free or free trial before also its for the first time ever i dont wait for the next dynasty warriors game there is no hype at all and i guess i am not the only one ..
i wanted the open world and the things they added but some how its killed the series i wish in future they make it better or back to the old way and by that we will simply enjoy musou and hack and slash all the troops without any mercy..
i did enjoy DW9 but if anyone want to enjoy this kind of games then just buy 8 not 9 </3

After 120 hours on console, I'm back at it on PC. Don't really know what it is about this game that I love so much. I mean it's objectively a technical mess (especially on PC), yet here I am, playing it all over again. There's just something weirdly compelling about Dynasty Warriors, of all things, trying to do a Ubisoft-style open world.
Anyway there's a free demo, so my review here shouldn't really mean much to you one way or the other. Try it for yourself. You might just find yourself enjoying it the way I do.
(But let's be honest, statistically speaking, you probably won't. In which case, Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate Definitive Edition is probably what you're looking for. Go try that instead.)
