Dead in Vinland
DEAD IN VINLAND is a survival/management game, mixed with RPG and adventure elements, about a Viking family trying their best to survive on a mysterious island. Exiled on a faraway and unknown land, lead Eirik and his family on their quest to survive. Manage their physical and mental health, explore the island, organize your camp and deal with other human beings. Some will help you, and some will be less… friendly. Unveil the esoteric mysteries of Vinland. They could save your life… or lead you to your demise. Deep survival management simulation : find and gather resources, secure a supply of food, take care of the mental and physical health of your characters, fight diseases and wounds, ration your water supplies, endure the elements (storm, drought, rain…).

This is a hidden gem. I spent hours playing it, it has a lot of depth and progression to it, and also a lot of challenge. Overall a very unique game and one of a kind, I'd highly recommend giving it a try.

Rather long, but interesting.

I've completed the game twice, once on normal, once on the highest difficulty a few years apart and have also done two 'half-way' games to learn the systems before restarting "for real". I really enjoy the game, but it can absolutely be brutal and boring for long stretches, as mentioned by several of the negative reviews. I absolutely can't disagree, but the game still has a "every thing you do matters for survival" element that most survival games just do not have that makes it stand out quite nicely.
I will say the main issue I have with the game is that the leveling system is a bit backwards. Most of the leveling perks are bad or neutral and only a few are good and a couple are great... and for new players, there's no way to tell the difference. You want the ones that give you extra experience and want to avoid the ones that give you bonuses to stats that can be increased. Leveling relies on stat increases and the bonuses make it so you have fewer of those so you wind up leveling less. It's a really counter-intuitive way to handle it, but that's what they went with. Knowing that though, it's easy enough to take 'good' level ups. Just go into the game knowing you have to be careful about what you pick and you might need to replay the first bit while you get a handle on how the game systems work and you should be fine.
It's also the case that once you have a crew that can handle the basic tasks, the game becomes incredibly easy and downright boring and you're gated from completing the game until you've explored the entire island, which can take a long time even under optimal play.
All that said, I still recommend it to people who enjoy difficult survival games. 8/10.

I am writing this review with 88.5 hours of playing, which i truly mostly enjoyed, but have not touched this game in a while. It is intriguing, it has a great setup, characters and plot twists. I really, really wanted to see the ending, but i was crushed by bad luck or small mistakes just too many times to keep going. Thus, i am conflicted - i do think the game is good, but my hand is not reaching for it any more. Recommend for stronger players

I played Dead in Bermuda a few years ago and now wanted to play their newer game. Lemme say this..it's hard! I tried playing it in an easy mode but had to switch to a custom difficulty to make it even easier and even then it was difficult to finish it. BUT i loved it! You can tell how much hard work and love went into this game and I enjoyed it so very much! I hope we get another game like from the developers some day :) I'm hooked!
